Brick Walls, Solving Genealogy Problems (Discussion Group)
10:00 am Hybrid Meeting - Both on Zoom & at Vacaville Cultural Center Library
Join us on October 14th at 10 AM for the Solano County Genealogical Society’s Discussion Group meeting.
This meeting will be both in-person and on Zoom.
The in-person location is the Vacaville Cultural Center Library at 1020 Ulatis Drive.
For our topic we will be discussing is Brick Walls, Solving Genealogy Problems
In genealogy, a “brick wall” is a point in your family history research where you can no longer identify or prove an ancestor using the records and information currently available.
Researchers use the term because progress feels like hitting a solid wall.
Roundtable Discussions are informal groups gathered to exchange or learn new ideas about each topic.
You have the option of attending in person at the library or virtually on Zoom.
Solano County Genealogical Society members and any guests wishing to attend virtually will receive a Zoom invite via email a few days before the event.

Sacramento Archives Crawl (Field Trip)
9:00 am Carpool from Vacaville to Sacramento
The Solano County Genealogical Society is having a special field trip to the Sacramento Archives Crawl. Those wishing to carpool with us will meet at the parking lot behind Old City Hall 610 East Main Street in Vacaville at 9:oo am on Saturday October 17. Members of neighboring Genealogy Societies are welcome to carpool with us. All are Welcome!
Free bus transportation is then provided between all four locations.
At the host sites, the public can view archival collections on display and take behind-the-scenes tours. Representatives from other archives and special collections libraries will also be present at the host locations to display their archival collections, including historic photographs, documents, and objects, and to answer questions about connecting with local history resources.
Archives Crawl Passports are given to guests as they visit the host institutions. The passport provides a map of the event and information about the participating institutions. Get your passport stamped at three of the four host sites, and you'll receive a set of limited-edition commemorative coasters featuring archival images that represent that year's theme.

30 Types of Maps Useful in Genealogy (Speaker Series)

On Saturday, November 7, 2026, starting at 11 a.m., the Solano County Genealogical Society will have Margaret (Peg) Kapustiak as our speaker. Her topic is: “30 Types of Maps Useful in Genealogy”.
Maps can unlock details about a family or lead researchers to new resources. Her presentation, will cover various kinds of maps, and look at details included and not included in maps. She will offer suggestions on locating maps for Europe and the USA. Her presentations are designed to provide you with extremely practical tips and ideas.
Margaret (Peg) Kapustiak’s has been a Genealogist/Family Historian for 48 years and has researched her family history in the Chicago area, the Midwest, New England, and New York state plus ten countries in both Europe and Asia, when she lived overseas. She has provided over 200 talks to organizations both nationally and internationally. She is the author of two books and 58 research articles. The last book on Venice, Florida was written for their 100 Anniversary of Incorporation as a city.
She currently volunteers at five historical/genealogical organizations and is on the Board of South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society, as their Strategic Planner and conducts their monthly Website SIG (Special Interest Group), specializing on the 50 states and internationally. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

Researching Military Records (Discussion Group)

Join us on November 11th at 10 AM on Zoom for the Solano County Genealogical Society’s Genealogy Discussion Group meeting.
We will be discussing Researching Military Records. Our focus will be on finding U.S. military documents from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War through modern conflicts, including draft cards, service records, pension files, casualty lists, and photos.
Roundtable Discussions are informal groups gathered to exchange or learn new ideas about each topic.

Finding Your Railroad Ties (Speaker Series)

On Saturday, December 5, 2026, starting at 11 a.m., the Solano County Genealogical Society will have Cindy Brennan as our speaker. Her topic is: “Finding Your Railroad Ties”.
There are only a few things that are as significantly entwined with American history as The Train. For many of our ancestors, trains represented the most profound change in their lifetime. New careers, travel, food, medicine and products that were never available before, were now a possibility. The nostalgia surrounding train travel in days gone by still captivates us today. Join us on a virtual train trip to learn how your family may have been connected to the magic of The Train. You might be surprised.
Cindy Brennan has over 20 years of experience in family history research, sparked by discovering a photograph of her husband’s family from 1899. She has served as the Newsletter Editor for the Sonoma County Genealogy Society since 2009 and has shared her expertise through articles and presentations for genealogists and family historians.
Her approach combines historical context with genealogical methodology, making it a valuable resource for anyone researching ancestors who may have worked on or been affected by the railroad industry.

Solano Genealogical Potluck (Holiday Potluck)
12:00 pm Veterans Memorial Building 549 Merchant, Vacaville
Our Solano County Genealogical Society is having a Holiday Potluck on Tuesday December 8th 2026 at 12 noon.
The event will be at the Veterans Memorial Building, located at 549 Merchant Street, in Vacaville.
All members and their guests are invited.
Drinks will be provided.
No alcohol is allowed.
Please let us know if you are planning to attend and what favorite food dish you will bring to share. RSVP by email to scgs@scgsca.org by Dec 4th so that we have an idea on how many people to expect.

Picking Topics for 2027 (Discussion Group)
1:00 pm a short meeting held during our Potluck
We usually have a roundtable discussion group annually in December to our pick topics for the following year.
This year we will not hold a seperate event to do that.
We instead will hold a brief mini-meeting during at our Holiday Potluck where we will decide what subjects we want to talk and learn more about next year.
Come and join members of the Solano County Genealogical Society to hear suggestions for topics and maybe suggest a topic yourself for our monthly discussion groups which will be held on the second Wednesday of each month (except July & August) through 2027 at 10:00 a.m.
We welcome all ideas for our topics. We are also looking for volunteers to lead the discussions.
Roundtable Discussions are informal groups gathered to exchange or learn new ideas about each topic.
This short meeting will be in person at our Potluck. It will not be on Zoom.
